Happening at the Crossroads February 29, 2008
by Coggin Heeringa Lions,
lambs? Kites? No, we know it's March when seed catelogues start
arriving at home and when the members of the various garden clubs start
cleaning the greenhouse at Crossroads at Big Creek.
The
greenhouse in the Lower Level of the Collins Learning Center has just
undergone a major upgrade. Ron Amos of Evergreen Nursery
has added professional-grade grow lights and has created a
demonstration bog garden featuring an array of carnivorous plants.
Volunteers
from Friends of Crossroads and the Sturgeon Bay Home and Garden Club
have scrubbed and treated the every surface of the Greenhouse , and
starting next week, a Learning in Retirement class will start
using the the new equipment during a three week class in organic
gardening.
Several weeks later, the Sturgeon Bay Home and Garden
Club, with help from local young people, will plant their "saved
seeds" which will in a few short months be transplanted into the
Heritage Garden at the Historical Village at the Crossroads.
Yes,
March is the time of year for planning gardens. For that reason,
Master Gardeners of Door County have invited special guests, Roy and
Charlotte Lukes to present a program called "Attracting Birds to Your
Back Yard" on Tuesday, March 11, at 7:00. They will help you choose
shrubs, trees and flowers which will help attract birds to your yard.
This program is free and open to the public.
Each month, on the
Saturday closest to the new moon, the Door Peninsula invites the
community to a viewing night at the Leif Everson Observatory. Viewing
night will begin at 7:00 on Saturday, March 7. Members of DPAS
are eager to help you enjoy the wonders of the cosmos. Please use the
Utah Street Entrance to Crossroads and dim you lights as you approach
the StarGarden.
Crossroads at Big Creek is a donor-supported
preserve for life-long learning focusing on science, history and the
environment. The Learning Center is located at 2041 Michigan
Street (across from Whitetails Unlimited) in Sturgeon Bay. The Center
will be closed to the public on Friday afternoon and Saturday for a
graduate level teacher education class offered by the University of
Wisconsin-Green Bay.
The
Collins Learning Center at Crossroads is located at on County Highway T
across from Whitetails Unlimited. To reach the Leif Everson Observatory
and Stonecipher Astronomy Center, use the Utah Street Entrance. If
skies are clear, call 746-5896 for a recorded message announcing
whether the observatory will be open.
