"A
Nation at a Crossroads" is the theme of the Crossroads
Family History Day 2008 on Saturday, September 20. We are thrilled to
announce that President Abraham Lincoln will present the Keynote
Address for children and their families at 11:00.
On this day of
"Living History," families are invited to visit the encampment of
Company E of the Second Wisconsin Civil War Re-enactors, chat with
costumed characters from the Door County Historical Society,
participate in games and do chores of the 1860s in the Historical
Village, purchase period (but freshly-home baked) breads and goodies
from the Sturgeon Bay Home and Garden Club, and hear and have pictures
taken with President Lincoln, a.k.a. James Conine.
James Conine
presented a memorable and inspiring lecture at Crossroads several
years ago. He also is the three time winner of the National
Abraham Lincoln Speaking and Look-a-Like Competition.
Holding an
Associate Degree in Civil Engineering, a Bachelor of Science in
Mathematics, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence, Conine in an avid
historian. He managed a successful 30 year career as a land surveyor on
the Georgia Coast. In the mid 1990s, he gradually phased out his
surveying practice to devote himself full time to his Abraham Lincoln
presentations.
James Conine travels throughout the United States
and Europe delivering his first person portrayal of President Lincoln.
He entertains, educates, and motivates by using Lincoln ’s personal
life experiences to emphasize honesty, integrity, ambition, and
patriotism.
This free event runs for 9:00-2:00 at The Historical
Village at The Crossroads and in the Collins Learning Center. See
Schedule below or for more information, call 920.746.5895. Crossroads
recently received a $3000 grant from the Wisconsin Space Grant
Consortium to offer classes and workshops for teachers in Elementary
Astronomy. These non-threatening programs are designed for teachers
with little or no experience or prior interest in space-related
science. The grant enables us to offer a $50 stipend and a free dinner
to Wisconsin teachers who participate in our workshops. The first
workshop, Our Solar System, will be offered Monday, September 22 at
4:30.
Alas, we don’t have the money to offer stipends to the
general public, but we will spring for dinner and give free materials
to anyone who wants to learn the basics of astronomy.
Pre-registration is required. Call 746-5895.
Are you seeing a
lot of wild mushrooms as you wander around the outdoors of Door County?
Would you like to be able to identify some of them and perhaps know
which ones are edible – and more important, which are not? The Door
County Master Gardeners Association is sponsoring the program
"Mushrooms of Door County" by Charlotte Lukes on Tuesday, September 23
at 7:00 PM.
Charlotte Lukes has been studying the
wild mushrooms of Door County since 1972. Her records of fungi and
mushrooms in Door County have resulted in some 540 species being
identified. She has conducted workshops, classes and hikes about wild
mushrooms for numerous years. The program will feature many pictures of
these mushrooms taken by Charlotte and her husband Roy Lukes, a
well-known naturalist. The program is open to the public and
free.
Crossroads at Big Creek is a donor-supported learning
