Happening
at the Crossroads: April 30,
2010
by Coggin
Heeringa
At
Crossroads at Big Creek, visitors are welcome as the flowers that bloom
in the spring. The flowers are in bloom and the blossoms are very, very
welcome.
It’s not your imagination. The flowers at Crossroads –
in the Heritage Garden and along Big Creek – are blooming several weeks
earlier than usual. The suckers have run and gone (though their scent
remains). Even the forest wildflowers are budding out.
Some
species of spring flowers respond to the hours of daylight. Light can
penetrate soil and many seeds germinate and perennials start to grow in
response to a certain photoperiod.
Other plants respond to the
temperature of the soil. This year, the snow melted early and the soil
has been exposed to many days of warm sunshine. Consequently, we have
had a gloriously flowery spring.
Apparently, 2009 was gloriously
flowery for garden experts Jan Wos and Glenn Spevacek . So the
Door County Master Gardeners’ Association will bring these
popular speakers to Crossroads on May 11 to present: “The
Jan and Glenn Show – the Best of 2009”.
From Bangkok to Chicago,
Madison to Warsaw , the dynamic duo from Mayflower Greenhouse in Green
Bay will review their travels of the past year and they will share new
ideas gathered from near and far. There will be container and
gardening ideas, new plants and, of course, lots of fun! This program
is free and open to the public.
Gardeners will be thrilled to
learn that Crossroads is collaborating with Sustain Door to sell rain
barrels again this year. The 55 gallon, recycled plastic barrels are
available in two styles: with a flexible elbow that attaches to a
downspout or with two screened openings on the lid. Barrels are
fully assembled with brass fittings. The cost is $65 and rain barrels
be purchased between 2:00-5:00 daily (or by appointment) at the Collins
Learning Center .
While the nature hikers search for woodland
species such as starflowers, the members of the Door Peninsula
Astronomical Society turn their attention to making final
arrangements for Astronomy Day scheduled for Saturday May 15. The
festivities will take place in the Astronomy Campus of Crossroads and
will include planetarium shows, exhibits, solar viewing, and hands-on
demonstrations for the whole family from 1:00-4:00. In the
evening, at 7:00 we will celebrate “The 20th Anniversary of the Hubble
Space Telescope” with a presentation in the Collins Learning Center
followed by Night Sky Viewing. Mark your calendars.
Crossroads
at Big Creek is an educational learning preserve located at 2041
Michigan Street in Sturgeon Bay . The Collins Learning Center is open
2:00-5:00 daily and during scheduled events.
Sunday, May 9, 1:00 Mother’s Day Hike
Your
could take flowers to your mother on Mother’s Day, or you could take
Mom to see the flowers. If your mother is a hiker, or if you like to
hike, join the naturalist for this one hour holiday hike. Meet at
the Collins Learning Center .
